SLJ Legs, Tally and More!

For this 2025 Summer Learning Journey we answered some equations and questions and learnt about the new Zealand Centipede. I found interesting that there are about 3,000 species discovered around the world.

  1. Kia ora Kaleb,

It is fantastic to see you working so hard on the Summer Learning Journey! I see from your “About Me” that you are a Year 7 student at Panmure Bridge School and that maths is one of your favourite subjects.

Your math skills really shine in this post! I noticed you correctly calculated that 250 legs divided by 5 equals 50 pairs, and that 100 divided by 4 equals 25. It is also very interesting to learn that centipedes always have an odd number of leg pairs.

You mentioned that you enjoy playing online games with friends because they are fun, did you find this digital math activity felt a bit like a game too?

Of all the centipede facts you researched for this grid, which one was the most surprising to you?

Keep up the wonderful blogging, Zana Yates (SLJ Team)

    1. Kia‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ ora Zana,

Thank you very much for your generous and motivating comment. I really appreciate it that you took the time to read my blog and give me your feedback.

It is good to hear that you noticed my maths working, maths is one of my favourite subjects, so I had a lot of fun using it in this activity. The digital math activity really gave me the impression of a game because it was interactive and made me think, but at the same time it was still enjoyable.

The most surprising fact about a centipede for me was that they always have an odd number of leg pairs. I used to think that they could have any number, so it was really interesting to me to find that out!

Once more, thank you for your support and encouragement.

      Ngā ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌mihi,
